A contemporary American Gothic, Casa De Hojas is an exploration of the shared darkness haunting all our lives. It is a tale of love, loss, and hope in which the line between reality and the afterlife becomes blurred as two people grapple with their own personal demons. This darkly beautiful novel was first published under the pseudonym “Don DeLillo” and it boasts a lexicon rich in Spanish terms and imagery. The book is most famous for its narration: almost every chapter begins with a different voice — sometimes without warning — giving readers glimpses into shifting perspectives of characters past and present. It is a subtle, haunting novel that starts as a ghost story and ends as a love story. "Casa De Hojas" is less a traditional novel than a collection of prose poems. In the book, the prose poem is given equal status to the novel form as it exists in most novels: as an autonomous entity with its own plot and structure. The book's structure bears resemblance to those of other DeLillo novels such as Underworld and Libra, but also features aspects of haiku poetry and haiku-inspired haikus. The form of the haikus within these poems was inspired by Ezra Pound's "Grammar of Haiku". Pound defines "haiku" as a poem that is (1) made of time, (2) made of image, (3) made of space. The book itself is comprised of poems which would be called haikus if they were independent poems; each poem combines all three elements of Pound's definition: time, image and space. Z.D. DeLillo was born in New York on November 20, 1940 and studied creative writing at Columbia University under Pulitzer-Prize winner John Berryman and Nobel laureate Derek Walcott. He was also taught by American poet and translator James Merrill, who began mentoring DeLillo in the art of translation. Linguistic interplay is prevalent throughout DeLillo's writing in many forms: - language within language (ie the use of Russian in Underworld) - language within language within language (ie. the cross-poems in "The Body Artist") - translation (John LeCarre's "A Legacy" translated into Spanish in "Amnesia Moon") - repeating words or phrases to suggest the passage of time ("Players" repeated phone call) or to emphasize a theme ("Time and space" repeated at beginning of each poem). The book's title was given by DeLillo's wife, artist Janet "Jade" Leane. It refers both to the book's subject matter and to the peculiar style of its composition. The book is said to be written in “Casa de hojas”, which literally means “house of leaves” or "book written in a method involving folding pages or cutting words, drawings or photographs out and arranging them on the page and/or binding them into the book." DeLillo has often used repetition as a signature style. In his first novel Americana, he made use of this technique – particularly in Chapter Six – by repeating names and phrases throughout pages.
